Swimming Clubs Profiles :: Barracudas SC, Surry, Britain

The Barracudas are an up and coming swimming club. About 18 months ago, we were in Division 5, and not swimming in any galas, then we got a new coach, Ivor MacKenzie Lee, who has worked really hard, along with the other coaches to raise the morale, stamina and training discipline of the swimmers, and we’ve been on the up ever since. We are now we are in division 3. The atmosphere is great now-we can have a bit of banter, without losing our focus on what we’re there for-to train hard and to win. These are some of the successes of the club swimmers this year.

On 20 January the Barracudas won round 1 of the Junior B Wey League in the Pool in the Park at Woking. This was a great gala for the club, with 98 swims, and a total of 41.84% personal best (PB) times achieved. The final result was a decisive win for the Barracudas, with 159 points, a 20 point lead over 2nd place Andover (139). In 3rd place was Staines (122) and in 4th Cheam Marlins (112).

On 17 February, the club swam in the Octopus Sprint League, coming 2nd out of 8 clubs. We have been moved up from the middle to the top to the top division in the Wey Junior league, where the competition is really quite fierce. We entered a small team in the 2007 Surrey Age Group Championships, and they all performed very well. This is a highly competitive round of galas, and selection is not automatic, so those who swam did well even to be chosen and we had several swimmers the top 10 in Surrey.

On 17 March we swam at Beckenham Spa in the Octopus League Round 2. Again, all the swimmers did very well and we managed a very respectable 3rd place, in a gala where only 9 points separated the top 5 clubs! Back at Beckenham on 14 April, the club again did very well, achieving 4th place overall in another very closely fought battle, narrowly missing out on 3rd place ! Our next gala is May 5th The Architects Cup at Aldershot Barracks.

Founded in 1958 we are a mixed swimming club for young people, our aim being to encourage our members to enjoy swimming in both competition and training, to improve technique and stamina, and to foster club loyalty and a good team spirit. By taking part in Club activities members will not only develop their personal skills but will make new friends and find both enjoyment and success in swimming with us. Since 1967 our Headquarters have been at Morden Park Pool, But we also have training sessions at Banstead Leisure Centre and Wimbledon College.
